Simple part IV: more shift dresses

I loved the Jil Sander dress from the S/S 2012 collection. There is something so classic and flattering for nearly everyone about a fitted dress that hits around knee length. On the other hand, it is something that is somewhat hard to shop for, unless you have very standard proportions. Because of the hourglass nature of the beast, inevitably it seems some tailoring is necessary to get a such a dress to fit well.

The other dresses shown above have a somewhat more forgiving cut–well, as forgiving as a dress can be which shows another 12 inches above the knee! Further motivation to dust off that gym membership and do a LOT of lunges in time for summer.

The thing I particularly like about the Jil Sander dress is that it’s a silhouette that really doesn’t go away from season to season–it seems like you can find similar dresses at any mid-range women’s clothes label that caters to women who work in the business world. It will be interesting to see if the Jil Sander collection affects fashion trends more broadly or not, much like the Louis Vuitton collection from A/W 2010, the one with the “New Look” style gathered full skirts, seems to have diffused across many labels and brands in the last 12 months or so (remember this campaign?).

I like the blue/gray color of the jil sander shoes, too. the “too the knee” look gives such a good silhouette, i guess i never really think about it.

  2. Love a dress with a simple silhouette. The Jil Sander dress is wonderful. It’s one of those pieces that I would hone in on because of its versatility. It’s great for work… I do find that I always have to tailor shift dresses.

I love that second image. It strikes me how simple but stunning all black is. I definitely have a hard time finding dresses. Too short, too long, too big on top, too wide on bottom, too narrow on bottom, etc! I’m looking for one that is pretty simple to be worn casually, but nice enough to be dressed up with heels.
